Book Review: Higher Wisdom

(The reason I'm not posting much these weeks is because I have a little break from school so instead of surfing the web in my free time I've been catching up on my reading list and doing a little much-needed socializing. )

I ordered Higher Wisdom: Emminent Elders Explore the Continuing Impact of Psychedelics from MAPS and just finished it. A real gem of psychedelic literature, Higher Wisdom is a collection of interviews by Roger Walsh and Charles Grob of 14 legendary luminaries of the 20th century. Every individual interviewed has done so much for humanity and shares immeasurably valuable wisdom here. I particular enjoyed the first interview with James Fadiman who peppers his profound stories with delightful and insightful wit. The interviews with world-renowned religious scholar Huston Smith and psychologists Gary Fisher and Myron Stolaroff were also particularly engaging for me.
This is a great book to give to someone who is just beginning to become interested in psychedelics as well as seasoned veterans of entheogenic history.

New Owsley 'Bear' Stanley interviews

These are rare considering his level of maintained privacy. The SF Gate has this new interview and in Rolling Stone's new 40th aniversary issue that is focussed on the 1967 psychedelic culture, there is a lengthy story about him, including some interview, by Robert Greenfield who wrote one of the two new biographies of Timothy Leary (The crappy, sensational one, so I hear. John Higg's biography, 'I Have America Surrounded,' however, is supposed to be the more well written and insightful one).
Nonetheless the Owsley bio in Rolling Stone is interesting. Anyone interested in that era might want to pick up a copy.

Entheogens and ecological awareness

I picked up the book Visionary Plant Consciousness and I have to recommend to everyone. It's a collection of talks, dialogues and discussions from the annual Bioneers environmental conference that specifically deal with entheogens and their central significance to the environmental movement. The team-ups and trialogues between visionaries are rare and amazing:
You have Paul Stamets with Kat Harrison with Dale Pendell.
There's Wade Davis with Terence and Dennis McKenna.
Other unexpected groupings include Charles Grob, Alex Grey, Andrew Weil, Michael Pollan, Luis Edwardo Luna, Jeremy Narby and peyote shamans and social activists.

I read John Marco Allegro: The Maverick of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a biography by his daughter and found incredibly fascinating. At times it read like an archeological adventure story story ala Indiana Jones with the conspiracies and the secrets of history being unveiled. An amazing human being, John Allegro was a master linguist and historian who was in charge of deciphering the Dead Sea Scrolls. While never a participant in drug culture, he had revealed the ancient cults of fertility and sacred mushrooms that were there roots of Christianity and other major religious branches.

(Literature): The Other side of Haight

I just read a great new book by target="blank>James Fadiman; The other Side of Haight. Short and sweet novel about the 60's, SF experience, written by the past Director of Noetic Science and the cofounder of the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology where he still teaches, so you know he has an eloquent and saturated understanding of the psychedelic experience. The story surrounds the the factual CIA project of the acid bordello where unwitting subjects of LSD were observed through two-way mirrors. Plus the free-love and beneficial and costly effects of consciousnesses expansion.
Equally excellent if you were 'there' and elucidating if you weren't. Recommendable to 'intiates' and the unintroduced alike.
