LCD's (Liquid crystal dispays) may soon be old hat. Researchers have found that certain crystals expand or twist when hit with the right shade of ultraviolet light. In other words, they can bend and stretch instead of break as crystals do normally. This has been done with electricity before (LCD), but doing it with light is an entire new mechanism:
