yes, I agree, it's a combo thing. I wish he'd gone into that idea a bit more, that is, that meditation techniques were all developed and mastered in a time when chemical assistance was probably a given.
Terence once said in response to a similar question; something to the effect that the difference between meditation and psychedelics is that: with meditation you spend your life looking for the gas pedal, and with psychedelics you spend the whole time frantically looking for the brakes.

Yes. Many so-called spiritual practices (such as yoga, meditation, mandala, mudra, drumming, chanting, poetry, etcetera) were developed over centuries as techniques for navigating time-space with entheogenic tools.
