Happy July 4th (old solstice)!

The Declaration of Independence was not signed on July 4th. That was just a day when one of the first drafts was released. In fact, the signatures on the later released final copy were collected over aperiod of two years. The reason the founding fathers marked July 4th as the national holiday was because before the Gregorian calendar was implemented July 4th was the summer solstice, which the Freemasons considered their New Years day.

Anyway, for a meditation on patriotism, here are some quotes from the Declaration of Independence followed by a stirring special comment from Keith :
